Foundation Activities

Fundraising:

Internal fundraising activities to benefit The Britton Fund include golf tournaments, bicycle rides, silent and live auctions, exhibit proceeds, book and calendar sales.

WCISA – The Western Chapter ISA, at the discretion of the board, may choose to fund research through the Britton Fund in the amount of $10,000.00 annually for the current fiscal year, provided the chapter reserves are held in the amount of 30% or greater of the annual operating budget.

Grants – The Britton Fund will actively pursue grant funding from state and federal agencies and private organizations to augment ability to fund educational and public outreach programs. These funds will be earmarked for distribution prior to reception.

Individual and Corporate contributions - The Britton Fund accepts gifts from individuals, companies, organizations, trusts and estates. Multiple donors may pool their gifts into a single fund within the Fund.

Projects and Programs:

Public Outreach - Develop and administer educational programs and events designed to increase awareness of the benefits of trees to the environment through practical application of current arboricultural standards.

Grant Programs - The Britton Fund’s grant program benefits the public by soliciting, awarded and disseminating research regarding the health, benefit, and proper care of trees and other organic matter.

The Research and Education Committee, established by The Britton Fund in conjunction with the Western Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture (WCISA), is charged with the following tasks and responsibilities:

1. Identifying research and education needs of the public that are not being addressed by other granting agencies
2. Developing requests for proposals for research and education projects of interest and value to WCISA members and the public at large
3. Evaluating proposals submitted to the committee for scientific soundness and applicability to research priorities
4. Funding projects deemed appropriate, desirable and feasible by the committee and monitoring their progress
5. Facilitating distribution of information generated from The Britton Fund research and education
6. Maintaining records of active and completed projects funded by The Britton Fund
7. Summiting committee reports to the Board

Research Priorities – Research funded by The Britton Fund should focus on the biology, management and care of trees and their relation to the environmental, social and economic benefits. Projects funded will generally be regional in natures, and must benefit the public. Preference will be given to projects conducted in the geographic area of Arizona, California, Nevada and Hawaii.

Funding – The committee and the approved projects will be funding by The Britton Fund. The amount will vary each year depending upon the financial status and contributions made to the Fund. The committee will prepare an annual budget and request for funding for submittal to the board of directors. The board of directors will inform the committee of the level of funding available by October of each year. Matching funds are encourages, and viewed as favorable.

The WCISA Executive Director shall maintain accounting of expenses and income. Prior approval by the Executive Director is required for reimbursable expenses by committee members.

Grant Programs – all grant proposals must be evaluated by the Research and Education Committee and approved by the board of directors. The Fund has two granting programs:

The Britton Fund Grants – Researchers are invited to submit research proposals for funding by The Britton Fund grants may be directed, by which the committee sends out a Request for Proposals, or non-directed, by which researchers submit unsolicited proposals

Sponsored Grants – Funds are donated by a sponsor with a specific project or subject in mind. The committee develops an RFP, reviews proposals, selects the contractor and monitors and administers the project.

Partnerships – The Britton Fund encourages research partnerships to enhance industry involvements, increase interdisciplinary interaction and provide broader funding potential.
